Champions League
We expected to win but not by 7! An excellent team display had the game won by half time with three goals in ten minutes. It was the biggest defeat suffered by a German side in the Champions League and City soon silenced the drums and chanting of the large number of visiting fans. A penalty started the avalanche and Aguero made no mistake from the spot. He scored again shortly after - his 27th of the season and Sane made it three nil though we had to wait for VAR to confirm it. Sane had another effort ruled out for offside before he made a good goal by Sterling and then assisted for the next two for Benardo and Foden. Jesus finished the scoring and City had got through by 10 -2 on aggregate -the highest by a British team in the Champions League.
A good atmosphere at the Etihad tonight
With injures and suspensions City had Laporte back from injury and Danilo at the centre of defence. Sane started ahead of Mahrez
There were a large number of noisy visiting fans and they gave a 'welcome' to fellow German Gundogan when he took an early corner
A raid down the right wing by Sterling gave Aguero a chance but the ball hit the post
David Silva is brought down by Stambouli
City do get the ball in the net but the flag is up
City have to clear a Schalke corner
Lots of passionate Schalke fans
an Aguero header is saved
Benardo is brought down in the area.......
The French referee gives a penalty and books Bruma
The ref has to explain the rules before Aguero nets from the spot
The City players and fans have a celebration though we did have a Video Review wait before the penalty was given
A minute or so later another attack by Sterling ends with him back-heeling to Aguero who shoots through the keepers legs for number two
It was his 9th cup goal this season
On 42 minutes Zinchenko put Sane through with very good pass and Leroy did the business to put City three up
The South Stand have more to cheer about and the City players enjoy the moment
In added time before the interval Sterling has a shot saved.
Early in the second half Danilo is booked and has to have treatment for an injury
Then shortly after Laporte tries to play hide and seek!
After Sane had missed with one attempt he broke away again and....
scored with another but......alas VAR ruled it offside
Then Sane sent a great pass to Sterling who hit it first time past the keeper and it was four nil
...or was it! The linesman had his flag up but VAR won the day and it was four nil
The late celebrations could begin!
Zinchenko got a yellow card for a foul on Embolo
Wow! Ederson has to make a catch
Sane dashes down the wing....
..and passes to Benardo who scores to make it five nil
More celebrations for the North Stand
Benardo thanks Sane and a minute or so later he is off again ......
......and passes to Foden who rounds the keeper....
...and scores his first Champions League goal
He had a warm response from the City fans and players
He must be one of the youngest City players to have scored in the Champions League and the South Stand did the Poznan
Foden nearly scored another but the keeper saved
On 84 minutes Jesus - on for Aguero hit number 7
It was his 17th goal this season and Benardo was the provider
It was an easy win for City and we wait to see who we will beat in the next round!
Ederson 6.5, Walker 7, Danilo 7, Laporte 7 (Delph) Zinchenko 7: Gundogan 8, Benardo 8, Silva 7.5 (Foden), Sane 8, Sterling 8, Aguero 8 (Jesus)
