City 2 Liverpool 1
January 3rd 2019 att.54,511
Well we did it! After a stuttering Christmas it was vital we reduced the lead Liverpool had at the top of the league. A tremendous team effort won the day. For once we actually did not have the most possession during the match so it was hard work for the sky blues. A terrific goal by Sergio Aguero from the narrowest of angles gave us a half time lead which was a bit fortuitous as Stones had to clear off the goal line. When Firmino scored with a header to level the scores we were getting a bit worried but Sane got the winner 8 minutes later and City triumphed. We could have made it even better in the final minutes but the three points were ours. In defence Kompany and Stones battled well but I thought too many passes went astray. Laporte did a good job standing in at left back and Danilo played his part. Fernandinho back at last was great in midfield and Benardo Silva worked his socks off covering lots of ground and he must have run well over 10 kilometers. Up front Aguero looked much more like his best and Sane and Sterling gave the Liverpool defence plenty to think about. David Silva was the only player to be below his best and he was the first to be subbed. Full marks to the lads and to the home fans who raised the atmosphere.
City were not quite at full strength. Laporte moved to left back with Kompany coming back into central defence with Stones. Good to see Fernandinho back along with David Silva. De Bruyne was on the bench
Liverpool as expected had full support so the ground was pretty full
An early run and cross by Sane ends up in the keepers hands
Looks like the secret sniper has made an early hit! Robertson appears to be injured!
Early work for Edison from a cross
Then on 18 minutes Mane gets through and shoots....
.....past Ederson but the ball hits the post and comes out.....
...and after a scramble Stones clears off the line and the ball is eventually cleared. Later replays showed that the ball was only a cm or so from going ALL over the line - Phew!!!
Ederson saves from Mane
Lovren gets a yellow card for a foul on Aguero
Kompany got a yellow for a foul on Salah on the half hour
Sane is brought down.....
...and Wijnaldum gets a yellow for the foul
Sane crosses.....
.....and Alisson manages to clear it
Van Dijk heads clear
On 40 minutes Aguero gets the ball from Benardo.....
.....and fires the ball past the keeper.....
....and into the roof of the net to give City the lead - Wow what a goal!!
Just before half time - perfect goal and perfect timing - celebration time!
As the City players make their way back from the celebrations the Liverpool manager has some thinking to do
Sterling goes down but no free kick
Kevin is warming up - when will he come on we wonder!
Alexander-Arnold shoots wide
Danilo shoots just wide
Ederson saves firm Firmino
On 64 minutes Robertson crosses to an unmarked Firmino who heads into an empty net - disaster!
The Liverpool players and fans have something to smile about - pity!
Off goes Silva and on comes Gundogan
Sterling is fouled but he Liverpool players don't like it!
Sterling passes to Sane who shoots past Alisson and the ball hits the post.....
.....and goes into the net for a City goal !!! Wonderbar! Let the celebrations begin!
The subs join the corner celebrations
The City bench enjoyed that too!
City now get some pressure
Alisson saves from Aguero
Ederson saves from Salah
Pep did not like something
So the ref comes over for a word or two!
Stones heads clear
City manage to clear the danger
Otamendi comes on for Kompany on 88 minutes
Benardo has a shot saved
A Sterling effort goes just wide
Oh it was so near!
Almost time and even Alisson tries to attack
The two managers embrace and who is that running on...
the City bench celebrate
yes it's Mendy - who else!
The South Stand enjoyed that result
With the Liverpool lead reduced to 4 points City are back in the battle for the Championship
