There have been many comments on the web saying that the D300 over exposes. So I decided to test my second body to see what results I could achieve. I started by using my 'test rig'. The first images are straight jpegs reduced in size and saved for the web. The lighting was just room lighting with some daylight coming in from the right. The lower image with just settings of -.3 ev and -1 brightness looks better.

Then I tried lighting the set-up using a Nikon SB800 flash unit off camera slightly higher to the right. When using -.3ev and -1 brightness the results looks under-exposed but shadows can be recovered in Adobe camera raw
Now for some real life situations Some images have larger versions. With the exception of flash use I am tending to set -.3ev and -1 brightness and sharpness 4

I have now started to use centre weighting metering with minus .5 stop and this is giving me more consistent results. Will put on tests shortly
